Our recent tragedy at Sandy Hook certainly has created a monstrous dialogue from an abundance of perspectives from all walks of life.
My daughters had their annual check up and the firearms questions was served to the pair of them. They were quite candid about guns being in the home, how they are stored, why their Dad uses them, and then threw out some basic expectations when handling firearms with my wife as witness.
The conversation with the doctor and my wife led to my experience as a life long hunter, Maine Guide, and Hunter Safety Firearms instructor. In addition, she brought up how I have taken the time to address gun safety and operation with their BB guns as training aides.
I'm pleased with the representation my 6 and 8 year old made at the doctor's office, it surely reflects the seriousness shared with my two young ladies.
However, with rights come responsibilities and I've dedicated much of my life to education in the classroom as a teacher & hunter in the field. It's interesting that neither of my children have been exposed to violence on television or play shooting video games.
I do not agree with the question and answer process as part of the physical, but can say that children do see things through their own set of eyes and I hope that people who own firearms take the time to address the responsibilities & consequences of gun ownership.
Have a great new year.
